Why is the NFL going to a 17-match regular season – how is the extra game decided?

The NFL’s regular season is over, but why has it played out a 17-game regular season in the first place? What is the reason behind the increase from 16?

The 2021/22 NFL season is a bit different in that it features a pretty drastic change to the format of the regular season.

16 games in the regular season is as stable as an old Oak. Eight games at home – eight games on the road. Homely.

But in the 2021 season after the Tampa Bay Buccaneers announced Super Bowl LV, it was announced that the NFL would drop the 16-game season.

But why does the NFL play 17 games in the regular season?

17 NFL regular season games

One word is the answer. Money.

If the regular 16 games of the season give you X amount of money, what harm does it do to throw one more in for its sake?

After all, fans get what they want: see their team play more often; sponsors get more airtime; and the NFL gets even more broadcast money from partners like Fox and CBS.

Everyone is a winner, especially the bottom line.

How are side matches decided?

Obviously, a 16-match season with 32 teams worked perfectly. You play once at home and then return the faovur to your server a few weeks later.

AFC teams get home preference in match 17.

The NFL overcame the 2020/21 standings and matched the final tables of the AFC and NFC.

For example, the AFC East won the Buffalo Bills – they played Washington Football’s NFC East group top.

This is repeated for each division.

Due to the extra game, the knockout stages were forced to be delayed by a week, causing the Super Bowl to be delayed.

That now happens on February 13 in California, as opposed to the first week of February.
