Why was E3 2022 cancelled? ESA announces “revived” event in 2023

ESA has announced that both the face-to-face and digital events have been canceled for 2022, leaving many fans disappointed.

The news was first teased on March 31, before the organization issued an official statement to confirm its decision.

Social media users hoped the announcement could be an April Fool’s joke as many companies took the opportunity to pull pranks.

E3 has been cancelled

The news was first broken on social media by Will Powers, who serves as PR for gaming peripherals maker Razer.

In a Twitter post on Thursday (March 31), he wrote: “Just got an email. It’s official, E3 digital is officially canceled for 2022. Lots of mixed feelings about that.”

IGN independently confirmed the announcement and reported that they had seen the email provided by Powers.

Why was E3 cancelled?

The Entertainment Software Association (ESA), which organizes E3, stated that Showcase 2022 was canceled so that the organization can “Focus his resources and use this time to shape our plans and deliver an entirely new experience that fans will love.”

“We previously announced that E3 will not be held in person in 2022 due to the ongoing health risks related to COVID-19. Today we announce that there will also be no digital E3 showcase in 2022,” ESA said in a statement.

“Instead, we will focus all of our energy and resources on delivering a revitalized physical and digital E3 experience next summer. Whether enjoyed from the show floor or your favorite devices, Showcase 2023 will bring the community, media and industry back together in a whole new format and interactive experience.”

The cancellation was influenced by the ongoing pandemic situation, which made the prospect of hosting a major video game trade event even more difficult.

ESA planned to host a physical event in 2022 after there was no event in 2020 and only a digital one in 2021. However, the organization announced in January this year that it had transitioned to a digital-only event for this year.

Unfortunately, the current announcement confirms that the face-to-face and digital events have now been postponed to 2023.

People react to the news

Many fans are disappointed with the news that there will be no E3 event in 2022.

Confused by the news, one Twitter user asked: “E3 is officially canceled this year or is it an April Fool’s joke? Still my heart hearts.”

Another person commented: “Well folks, unfortunately E3 2022 and the digital event got canceled yesterday. No, this is not an April Fool’s joke. That’s the real deal.”

“E3 cancelled?!?” a third person responded, before speculating, “But it’s the biggest event of the year. I don’t know how to think about this. Must be an April Fools joke.”
