After the merger with Crunchyroll, anime fans are now wondering if they should cancel their Funimation subscription or not?
In August 2021, Sony will be official acquired streaming platform Crunchyroll as part of its Funimation group for a whopping $1.75 billion.
CEO Colin Decker said in a press release, “When we brought Funimation and Crunchyroll together last year, our top priority was to put fans first” and that “the new Crunchyroll is the realization of a dream.”
Then, earlier this year, the platform began releasing information on how the merger between the two anime streaming giants would work, including broadcasting previously exclusive content.
As we finally move into the spring schedule and the new era of anime streaming, fans are wondering if they should unsubscribe from Funimation?
Should You Cancel Your Funimation Subscription?
While canceling your Funimation subscription is a personal choice, Crunchyroll itself has done so specified that fans should stop paying the streaming platform in favor of their own premium plan.
This is because from the spring anime panel starting on April 1stStAll simulcast anime titles will be available exclusively on Crunchyroll, with the exception of the “seasonal samplers” discussed in the following section.
“All new series from the upcoming Spring 2022 season will stream exclusively on Crunchyroll going forward, and you can watch many of Funimation’s and Wakanim’s most popular existing series on Crunchyroll through the end of March 2022. So, if you already have a Crunchyroll subscription, then you’re done and can cancel Funimation when you’re ready!” – crispy roll.
For the average fan who is only interested in watching the very latest series, you should definitely cancel your Funimation subscription in favor of the Crunchyroll service.
Importantly, Funimation will continue to “just keep adding new episodes of current series,” that is, shows like One Piece that run year-round and aren’t part of the season list. This means that if you’re an avid fan of these long-running shows, you shouldn’t cancel your Funimation subscription.
However, the vast majority of these shows will also be available on Crunchyroll each week, meaning the more accessible and cheaper option is to cancel your Funimation subscription.
You might be wondering if it’s worth keeping a Funimation subscription so you can catch up on all the free episodes of shows that aired before Spring 2022?
Well, these episodes will still be available on Funimation, but it turns out that the vast majority of these episodes have already moved to Crunchyroll.
as specified in a recent blog post: “Starting March 1, 2022, existing and new Crunchyroll subscribers will have access to library and simulcast content previously exclusive to Funimation & Wakanim.”
The platform slowed Add all previously exclusive series to its own content library, both subtitled and dubbed. With the service also phasing out its free simulcasting of new titles, it means Crunchyroll is now the definitive destination for all your anime streaming needs.
Take advantage of Crunchyroll’s seasonal sampler model
The good news is that if you’ve canceled or are about to cancel your Funimation payment, there’s no pressure to start a new subscription with Crunchyroll right away.
In addition to continuing to offer a 14-day free trial of its premium service, the platform will also be offering a seasonal sampler model throughout April.
As explained in a recent Messages post: “To showcase our new seasonal simulcasts, we’ll be watching first episodes of select titles for free for a limited time as part of a ‘seasonal sampler’.”
The seasonal sampler series includes:
- Spy x family
- A couple of cuckoos
- Dawn of the Witch
- Tomodachi game
- Skeleton Knights in another world
- Shikimori is not just a cutie
- The greatest demon lord is reborn as a typical nobody
- Trapped in a dating sim: the world of otome games is tough on mobs
The first three episodes of these series are available one week after their premium premiere until December 31stSt April; After this date, all of these episodes require a subscription.
“We want to encourage as many fans as possible to explore new shows and see the full benefits of Crunchyroll Premium Access. Crunchyroll is making over 1,000 hours of free viewing available to viewers through our ad-supported tier and will continue to offer free content in the future.” – Crunchyroll.
