Wild Hearts, EA’s Monster Hunter Contender, is coming out in February

EA and Koei Tecmo have announced that Wild Hearts, developer Dynasty Warriors’ Monster Hunter-like action game, will be released on February 17, 2023.

We got our first real look at the game, which will be coming to PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC (with an extended gameplay reveal slated for October 5th), in a new trailer. Set in Azuma – effectively a feudal fantasy Japan – teams of up to three players face off against “huge, nature-infused beasts called Kemono” and use a mix of action-combat and crafting to create outlandish contraptions.

In our exclusive interview with Koei Tecmo directors Kotaro Hirata and Takuto Edagawa, we learned a lot more about these contraptions, the Monster Hunter comparisons, and why Koei teamed up with EA for Wild Hearts.

Wild Hearts can be played solo or in co-op, with crossplay across all platforms. Your player character is almost knocked out by a winter wolf known as the Death Stalker before being given access to “a life-sustaining technology and… forced to restore balance to the entire region”.

While the game will look instantly familiar to Monster Hunter fans (or fans of Omega Force’s previous Monster Hunter-like series Toukiden), its core innovation seems to lie in the form of karakuri, magically constructed structures that can aid in your hunt.

The trailer shows the player constructing karakuri, which serve as platforms to jump onto monsters, building a giant hammer and bombs, and even creating a portable helicopter to glide. Multiple players can also use karakuri, with a shot showing players constructing harpoons that will hook a monster in place.

In a press release, Koei Tecmo Executive Vice President Yosuke Hayashi stated, “With Wild Hearts, we not only wanted to show the evolution, infusion, and real-world threat of Kemono, but we also wanted to create a game that puts the crafting at the core of the game.” Experience and redefines what is possible in an animal hunting game. We’ve taken great care in designing our karakuri to fit into combat, and we’re excited for players to use these powerful mechanics to battle giant beasts and traverse the world.”

Wild Hearts is the latest entry in EA’s Originals catalogue, which has typically been used to bring indie games to a wider audience. Other EA Originals include It Takes Two, Lost in Random, Unravel, and more.
