Following the season 22 finale of The Voice, which will air live December 13, 2022, Blake Shelton has one more season to go before he hangs up his hat and ends his tenure as the show’s oldest coach. But with Shelton set to retire and a different group of coaches joining him for season 23, many fans are wondering if Tuesday’s finale will be the last show for Gwen Stefani, his wife and fellow coach. Here’s what you need to know:
Gwen Stefani says it would be ‘weird’ coaching without Blake Shelton
Stefani met Shelton on The Voice and eventually fell in love with him. Both singers were still with their former spouses when Stefani joined the series as a rookie coach for season seven, beginning taping blind auditions in spring 2014.
The following summer, Shelton announced that his marriage to country music star Miranda Lambert was over, which took a toll on Stefani, who was privately going through her own breakup with rocker Gavin Rossdale. Per People Magazine, Stefani told Howard Stern in 2016 that she then confided in Shelton about their own breakup, not expecting them to fall in love. They officially started dating in November 2015 and married in July 2021.
While Shelton has never missed a season of “The Voice,” Stefani has appeared in a total of six seasons: 7, 9, 12, 17, 19, and the current season 22. She will not be a part of Shelton’s final season She has no specifics Announced plans for the future.
In November, she said Extra that she hadn’t really thought about returning to the show after Shelton was gone.
“I have no idea,” Stefani said. “Every season I’ve been on the show, it’s been a last minute (request).”
Then she exclaimed, “Yes, ask me back! I will come back. It would be really weird without Blake!”
But that probably won’t happen anytime soon, as both she and Shelton appear to be looking forward to more time at home with their family. Stefani and Rossdale share three boys that Shelton loves being a bonus dad to.
“I’m so happy for him because we have lives outside of work and it’s a really good life and it’s really fun,” Stefani told Extra. “We have Oklahoma, something I never knew I needed and wanted; We’re planting a garden… We look forward to doing some of those family things.
What could lure Gwen Stefani back to The Voice?
Stefani, 53, has been vocal about how much she loves being a part of The Voice and mentoring young artists, which could be enough to lure her back for a future season. And maybe she just wants to try to win again. She has only won the competition once, with Carter Rubin in season 19, and she has no chance of winning again as all of her team members were eliminated before the season 22 finale.
Even before Team Gwen was voted out, she was already sad about the imminent end of the season.
“It was just a really great season, much too short.” She told Entertainment Tonight before the semifinals on December 6 with tears in his eyes. “It’s mine and Blake’s last season … I can’t even get the words out of my mouth because it sucks.”
“I never imagined doing something like this in my life and it was one of the funnest things I’ve ever done,” she continued. “I love being a trainer, I love seeing participants grow, I love making a difference, it’s super inspiring to me. And on top of that, here I meet my best friend who will be mine forever.”
The final two shows of Season 22 will air tonight (December 12) at 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time with live performances, and the two-hour results will air tomorrow (December 13) at 9:00 p.m. Eastern Time.
