Will Smith days after the slap resigned from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Chris Rock on live TV at the 94th Academy Awards on Sunday March 27th.
“I responded directly to the Academy’s disciplinary hearing and will fully accept any consequences for my conduct. My actions at the 94th Academy Awards were shocking, painful and inexcusable. The list of those I have hurt is long and includes Chris, his family, many of my dear friends and family, everyone present and the global audience at home. I betrayed the academy’s trust,” Smith, 53, said in a statement Friday, April 1, via diversity.
“I deprived other nominees and winners of the opportunity to celebrate and be celebrated for their extraordinary work. My heart is broken. I want to bring the focus back to those who deserve recognition for their accomplishments and allow the Academy to go back to the incredible work they do to support creativity and artistry in film,” he continued. “As such, I resign my membership in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and will accept any further consequences that the board deems appropriate.”
David Rubin, President of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, issued a response shortly thereafter.
“We have received and accepted Mr. Will Smith’s immediate resignation from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences,” Rubin said Us weekly. “We will continue to advance our disciplinary process against Mr. Smith for violations of the Academy’s standards of conduct before our next scheduled board meeting on April 18.”
During the Oscars, Rock made a joke about it Jada Pinkett-Smith‘s shaved head at the Best Documentary Awards ceremony. Jada, 50, who has spoken openly about suffering from hair loss due to alopecia, rolled her eyes at the reference to her looks.
For his part, her husband shocked viewers when he took the stage and slapped Rock. When he returned to his place, Fresh Prince of Bel Air Alum was seen repeatedly saying, “Keep my wife’s name out of your friggin’ mouth”.
Later that night, Will addressed the incident while accepting the Best Actor award for his performance in King Richard.
“Oh man. Richard Williams was a fierce defender of his family,” the Philadelphia native said during the emotional acceptance speech. “I am called in my life to love people and protect people and be a flow for my people. I know what we’re doing, you have to be able to take abuse. You have to be able to get people talking crazy about you. In this business you have to be able to be disrespected by people. And you have to smile, you have to pretend that’s okay.”
He added: “I would like to apologize to the Academy. I would like to apologize to all my fellow candidates. … Thank you for this moment. And thank you on behalf of Richard and the entire Williams family. Thanks. I hope the academy will invite me again.”
Shortly after the awards show wrapped, a source exclusively shared US that Rock originally rehearsed his speech with no mention of Jada. The insider noted, “Will wasn’t there [the] Sample.”
US also confirmed that the Adults star had no plans to press charges after the public altercation. “LAPD investigative authorities are aware of an incident between two individuals during the Academy Awards program,” the Los Angeles Police Department said in a statement Sunday. “In the incident, one person hit another. The person concerned declined to make a complaint to the police. If the party involved desires a police report at a later date, the LAPD is available to prepare an investigative report.”
The South Carolina native, who has worked with Will and Jada on separate projects in the past, broke his silence on the scandal during a comedy show at the Wilbur Theater in Boston, Massachusetts on Wednesday, March 30.
“What’s up, Boston?” he asked the audience. “How was your weekend? I’m still processing what happened,” an eyewitness exclusively tells US that the audience “laughed a lot and it really relieved the tension” for Rock and that it was a “great show”. The following night, at a second show, he knocked out a fan who was shouting “Fk Will Smith” from the audience. Rock reportedly responded with “no, no, no, no, no” before continuing his set.
