Will Smith resigned from the Motion Picture Academy on Friday, almost a week after he attacked comedian Chris Rock during the live broadcast of the Academy Awards.

Smith said in a statement released Friday afternoon that he would “accept any further consequences that the board deems appropriate.” I will fully accept any consequences for my behavior. My actions at the 94th Academy Awards were shocking, painful and inexcusable.

“I will fully accept any consequences for my behavior. My actions at the 94th Academy Awards were shocking, painful and inexcusable,” Smith said in the statement.

“I betrayed the academy’s trust. I gave fellow nominees and winners an opportunity to celebrate and be celebrated for their extraordinary work,” Smith said in a statement. “My heart is broken. I want to bring the focus back to those who deserve recognition for their accomplishments and allow the Academy to turn their attention back to the incredible work they do to support creativity and artistry in film.”

Smith’s resignation came two days after the academy met to initiate disciplinary proceedings against Smith for violating the group’s standards of conduct.

On Sunday, Smith stepped onto the stage from his seat in the front row of the Dolby Theater and slapped Rock in the face for making a joke at the expense of Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. Moments later, he won the Best Actor award for his role in King Richard.

***VOICE WARNING***

Rock, who wanted to present an Oscar for best documentary, declined to press charges when asked by police.

He has only briefly addressed the attack publicly, saying at a comedy concert in Boston this week that he’s still “kind of processing what happened.”

Smith shocked theater audiences and viewers at home when he took the stage after Rock joked, “Jada, I love you. ‘GI Jane 2’ can’t wait to see it.”

Pinkett Smith, who suffers from alopecia, had a clean-shaven head similar to Demi Moore’s in the original film.

In the hours after the attack, Will Smith accepted the Best Actor award, delivered a six-minute acceptance speech, and performed his hits with fellow Hollywood elite at the Vanity Fair Oscars after-party.
