Will Smith appears to meet Chris Rock during the 94th Academy Awards.

Will Smith speaks for the first time since he took Chris Rock on stage at the 94th Academy Awards. The Oscar winner shared a statement in an Instagram post on March 28, 2022.

“Violence in all its forms is poisonous and destructive. My behavior at the Oscars last night was unacceptable and inexcusable. Joking at my expense is part of the job, but a joke about Jada’s health was too much for me and I reacted emotionally,” wrote the “King Richard” actor.

He continued, “I want to publicly apologize to you Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong. I’m embarrassed and my actions were no indication of the man I want to be. In a world of love and kindness there is no place for violence.”

“I also want to apologize to the Academy, the producers of the show, all contestants and all viewers around the world,” his statement said. “I would like to apologize to the Williams family and my King Richard family. I deeply regret that my behavior marred what was otherwise a wonderful trip for all of us.”

“I’m still a work in progress,” Smith concluded his apology. “Best regards, Will.”

The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air actor also shared the statement on his Instagram story.

The Los Angeles Police Department announced that Rock declined to file a police report.

Smith slammed Rock after he joked about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith’s hair

In the most talked about moment, Rock joked that Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, would be appearing in a sequel to the 1997 film GI Jane. The comment was apparently in reference to the actress’ baldness, as the film’s main character is known to shave her head.

Pinkett Smith previously revealed that she was experiencing hair loss due to alopecia.

Although the moment was beeped in the United States, foreign broadcasts saw the moment unedited. A clip of the moment was shared on Instagram by Amanda Hirsch, the host of the Not Skinny But Not Fat podcast.

“Wow, Will Smith just blew me away,” Rock said as Smith walked away. He added, “Wow dude that was a GI Jane joke.”

Smith repeatedly replied, “Keep my wife’s name out of your damn mouth.”

“I will, okay,” he added. “Okay, that was the biggest night in television history. So we’re here to release a documentary.”

The Academy “condemns” Smith’s actions

Following the altercation, the Academy issued two statements.

“The Academy does not condone violence” The Oscars tweeted in the early hours of March 28, 2022. “Tonight we are delighted to celebrate our 94th Academy Award winners, who deserve this moment of recognition from their peers and film lovers around the world.”

Her answer drew mixed reactions.

On Monday afternoon, the Academy released another statement condemning Smith’s actions.

“The Academy condemns Mr. Smith’s actions at last night’s show. We have officially initiated a formal investigation into the incident and will consider further actions and consequences consistent with our bylaws, standards of conduct and California law,” their statement said.
