A man who became rich and famous by pretending to fight aliens committed a true act of violence on TV on Sunday night – and just half an hour later he was given a standing ovation by the best of Hollywood. Is it any wonder that much of America has lost all respect for self-centered Hollywood?
To catch up with those who luckily don’t know, comedian Chris Rock presented at the Academy Awards and joked about Will Smith’s wife’s hair. She apparently has alopecia, medical hair loss, which Mr. Rock may or may not have known about, but many viewers at home probably don’t. In any case, it was a big hit, although jokes are part of the territory of being famous and Mr. Smith has no doubt heard worse.
He was first seen laughing in front of the camera, but moments later Mr. Smith came on stage and slapped Mr. Rock – hard by the looks of it. Then he returned to his seat and shouted expletives. Mr. Rock continued with the show to his credit. He reportedly declined to lodge a complaint with the police. The LA Police Department said it was aware of an incident where “one person hit another.” Oh, where could they find 15 million witnesses?
As if that wasn’t spectacle enough, Mr. Smith was then awarded the Academy Award for Best Actor. In his speech, he presented himself as a protector/sacrifice and said he was “overwhelmed by what God is asking me to do and be in this world.” He apologized to the film academy but not to Mr. Rock. “Love will make you do crazy things,” he added. Try this line at the local police station sometime and see how it works.
A few years ago, comedian Ricky Gervais hosted the Golden Globe Awards and got the Hollywood crowd laughing nervously when he told them that nobody cares what you think. This year’s Academy Awards showed why.
