Woman allegedly raped by tennis star’s husband, who is accused of ‘making a mountain out of a molehill’

An American woman who says she was raped by the husband of former British tennis number one Anne Keothavong has been accused of ‘making a mountain out of a molehill’, a court heard today.

The alleged victim claims company lawyer Andrew Bretherton pinned her face down on his bed and smothered her until she feared she would die during a horrific sexual assault after a date in May 2008.

But on cross-examination today, defense attorney Sarah Forshaw KC accused her of retold her version instead of answering a direct question and shouted “I surrender”.

In her statement to police, the alleged victim claimed she was very distressed after fleeing Andrew Bretherton’s home in Kensington and told the concierge to call the police or handcuff him.

Ms Forshaw, KC, recounted the evidence given to police, which said: “The concierge, he saw me, he knew I was in trouble, he said something to me like ‘What should I do?’

“I said something like, ‘Call the police or put handcuffs on him.’

Ms Forshaw then asked her: “Do you know if he called the police? Did the police tell you about the bouncer’s evidence or not?’

The woman said “I said something” to the bouncer.

Ms Forshaw, KC, replied: ‘When you left the flat you weren’t very distressed were you?

“I just want to tell you that over time you’ve made a mountain out of a molehill.”

In response, the alleged victim repeated the evidence already presented and told the court about the “brutal rape” she reportedly suffered.

Frustrated by the woman’s response, Ms Forshaw said: “You don’t have the right to come here and say what you want, you answer the question.”

The court also heard that there were significant inconsistencies in the victim’s statements – she told officers she had “some tears in my anus and some bruises”.

However, medical reports revealed that the alleged victim had a half-inch tear on the outside of her anus and a bruise on her thigh.

A court heard yesterday that Bretherton had invited the alleged victim to his flat, where he later pressed her face onto his bed and smothered her until she thought she was going to die.

The woman said if she hadn’t managed to get herself into a position to get some air, she would have died.

The woman, whose name cannot be released for legal reasons, said after he raped her anally and vaginally, she finally managed to break free and escape to the toilet in the “sterically empty” Kensington apartment.

On the night of the alleged rape, alleged victim and corporate attorney Bretherton had been on their fourth date and visited a gastro-pub before Bretherton showed her past his apartment and invited her.

Inside, she said Bretherton was “starting to get more assertive” and “very handy,” trying to touch her breasts and putting his hands down her pants before getting up to don Guns N’ Roses ‘Welcome to the Jungle’ and then attacked her.

The court was told she brought the lawsuit after reading about Harvey Weinstein 10 years after her alleged ordeal.

Company attorney Bretherton, who married Ms Keothavong in February 2015, denies two counts of rape.

She is to give her husband a character reference at the trial at Inner London Crown Court.

The process goes on.
