World Club Challenge: What a day for St Helens fans

Whether you were traveling in Australia, beating Penrith in St Helens (or anywhere else in the world) in the World Club Challenge was an epic, nerve-wracking and energy-sapping affair.

The 13-12 win, achieved through Lewis Dodd’s golden point, will also go down as one of the greatest and most dramatic moments in the club’s 150-year history.

The scenes at the west Sydney stadium were incredible with Australian media claiming that 1,000 Saints fans were inside the BlueBet stadium.

At home in pubs and bars – which opened at breakfast time to watch the game – and in living rooms, fans also caught every moment of the drama.

It was exciting to see Saints take an early lead with Jack Welsby outstanding.

But tension mounted in the second half as Penrith picked up momentum and eventually neared death.

Many fans said their nerves were on edge as the competition headed towards the Golden Point, but there was an explosion of joy and relief when Lewis Dodd landed that drop goal.
