Cody Rhodes has crossed the border back to WWE. The former AEW executive vice president and a founding member of that company made the key speculation well, appearing on Night 1 of WrestleMania 38 as Vince McMahon’s opponent of choice against Seth Rollins .
Rhodes, who recently stepped down as EVP and performed for AEW, received a standing ovation from those present at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas on Saturday. He was greeted with a pyro celebration in the ring, up the ramp and on stage before his signature track hit and he returned to WWE for the first time since 2016.
A major storyline that begins on the night of WrestleMania 38 involves a mysterious opponent for Rollins chosen by McMahon, the WWE president. Rhodes won back using the same elaborate entrance and theme music he used in AEW.
Rhodes and Rollins came up with a fun, physical competition to compete for match of the night. “The American Nightmare” suffered severely with swelling on his forehead and many red rashes all over his body. Early in the competition, Rhodes briefly showed off the style of Stardust, a figurative makeover of Rhodes’s malicious gimmick before he left WWE.
The ending sequence shows Rhodes performing his finishing move, Cross Rhodes, twice into Rollins. He then delivered the Bionic Elbow in memory of his late father, the “American Dream” Dusty Rhodes. A Cross Rhodes has finally limited the former AEW star’s WWE return.
Rhodes left WWE in 2016 after a decade in the company’s system. Burdened by a humorous, face-drawn gimmick called Stardust, Rhodes reinvents himself as a major player in the indie scene for the first time.
Working with Kenny Omega and The Young Bucks (Matt Jackson and Nick Jackson), Rhodes became a member of the infamous Bullet Club. He was then a foundational factor in Tony Khan’s eventual launch of AEW.
While several notable WWE veterans – including Adam Cole, Bryan Danielson, Chris Jericho, CM Punk, Jeff Hardy and Jon Moxley – have jumped to AEW, this marks the first time an AEW veteran has signed a contract. with WWE.
Rhodes was a two-time intercontinental champion and six-time tag team champion at the time of his original WWE departure. He is back with more titles on his record, including the AEW TNT belt (three times), the NWA world heavyweight championship, the US IWGP championship and the ROH world championship as the title. reigns under his hand.
