A complaint by TV and radio presenter Yumi Stynes about her ex-husband’s alleged behavior, which made her fear for her safety, has prompted police to seek an AVO against him.

Stynes announced her split from her second husband, Martin Bendeler, in October last year after nine years of marriage.

The former canal [V] Host married Bendeler in 2012 and they share two children, daughter Mercy and a son whose name has never been publicly revealed.

He was not accused of any of those things and was not in court when the restraining order was approved on Tuesday.

She said she’s moved out of the marital home into her own apartment and told her co-hosts it was disheartening to be a single mom for the second time.

“I’m going through a breakup and there are kids and my ex involved, so I don’t want to say anything that hurts those people,” she said.

“I had to find an apartment, I had to move my things, all my crap is in boxes and bags… I had to change my address, throw away the keys that no longer work…

“It was a lot. I spent the weekend moving and I feel like I’m now starting my new life as a single mom. Here I am again.’

Stynes said she isn’t ready to tell the full story of the split just yet but expects to have another year to process her grief.

“I have hundreds and thousands of words to say, but I don’t think I’m ready yet,” she told listeners.

“Breakups don’t end quickly. I’ll probably stay in this process for another year… I’ll probably be pacing in the future.’

Stynes and Bendeler married in 2012 after she proposed to him on February 29, which, as a leap day, is traditionally the day women propose to men.

She was previously married to Ben Ely of Australian rock band Regurgitator from 2000 to 2008. They share two older children; Anouk and DeeDee.

Stynes wrote an article for the ABC in 2020 about staying friends with an ex, based on her experiences with Ely as a co-parent.

She encouraged people to “take the time when it’s first happening to encourage mutual respect and redraw the boundaries of your relationship.”

“A good breakup isn’t something you think about when you’re in the mood for a new love,” she wrote.

“And when it all falls apart, there’s no need to stay friendly — unless you’re sharing something important, like a business, friends, a creative project, or in our case, kids.”
