Chicago Bulls’ Zach LaVine No. 8 advances

Can Chicago Bulls guard Zach LaVine reach the same post-season heights that Phoenix Suns guard Devin Booker has? One of the few Bulls players with playoff experience certainly thinks so, and he took it upon himself to challenge LaVine to do so.

Tristan Thompson is the Bulls’ newest player, having joined the team on February 19 after being dropped by the Indiana Pacers on February 16. But he’s also one of only two players on the roster with championship experience. , won the championship with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2016.

The other is Alex Caruso, who won a ring with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2020 in the Orlando Bubble.

Both players collected their jewels along with LeBron James.

The Bulls have a big challenge ahead of them. The playoff first leg against the Milwaukee Bucks puts them at a disadvantage in terms of playoff talent and experience. Caruso talked about the importance of understanding one’s role when joining a team with championship aspirations on JJ Redick’s podcast “The Old Man & The Three” in November.

Thompson opted for a more direct approach.

Challenge issued

As first reported by KC Johnson of NBC Sports Chicago, Thompson said he challenged both Zach LaVine and Nikola Vucevic. For Vucevic — who Thompson says is too talented, too talented, able to do too many things on the field — it’s simply about “becoming the best in this series” and “a mismatched problem.” fit”.

As for LaVine, however, it’s much more specific.

Thompson also mentioned Donovan Mitchell of the Utah Jazz. Both players took their games to new levels once in the post-season.

Booker co-piloted the Phoenix Suns to the NBA Finals last season with Chris Paul, where they fell to the Milwaukee Bucks in six games. He averaged 27.3 points on a 55.8% shot with 5.6 rebounds and 4.6 assists in the playoffs with 10 games scoring at least 30 points.

Mitchell has been to the knockout stages every season of his five-year career, averaging over 20.0 PPG in each case, but failed to make it past the second round.

Like LaVine, Mitchell is a super athlete who doesn’t have great defense and could benefit from playing a little more focused and controlled. Mithcell’s Jazz teammate, Rudy Gobert, stressed Booker was proud of that finish.

LaVine has moments like these shared by Will Gottlieb of CHGO on Twitter where LaVine’s mental lapse simply causes a negative chain reaction.

Comparative value

Booker is not an athlete like LaVine and Mitchell. But he’s both a scorer like those two, and if you take Gobert and Thompson’s words, it’s a number. The French giant’s note that Booker prides himself on defensive play is interesting. There were times when the former University of Kentucky sixth man shied away from the less appealing parts of the game.

The Suns finished eight games ahead of the next team for an NBA best record of 64-18 this season.

Gobert’s comment about Booker was seen as a shot at Mitchell, who had notably disappointing after losing to the Los Angeles Clippers on March 30.

The Jazz won six of their last 10 games and finished as the West’s five-seeded despite their chemistry problems. These are the things Thompson talked about when he talked about the mental toughness needed in the post-season period.

“I have always believed that the team with the mental toughness, the sharp mind and the heart will have a chance to win this series.”

That could prove to be a problem for a Bulls team that has been publicly questioned about their mental toughness more than once in the days since the regular season ended.

Thompson is right

Thompson has scored 25 more playoffs in his career than the second most playoff-experienced Bulls player on the team, DeMar DeRozan. We heard DeRozan talk about how important an element will be in this series against the defending champion Bucks.

If this is what is needed for LaVine to take his game to the next level – and for Vucevic to reach his full potential – then so be it.

Nothing else worked and it would be a pity if their perception of the season was tarnished by an ugly post-production as they are poised to hand LaVine a maximum signing this season.
