Six Fun Ways to Stay Entertained During a Storm
Bad weather can put paid to outdoor plans, but what about when Mother Nature goes one step further and there’s a full-blown storm? We are so used to having our freedom that boredom can quickly hit (as the lockdowns during the Coronavirus pandemic proved).
If the weather outside is running riot, here are six fun ways to pass the time.
Go Old-School with Board Games
Sometimes the old ways are the best. Board games are a great way to pass the time and whether you are a Scrabble fanatic or a Monopoly aficionado, time will fly once the play gets underway. Just make sure you avoid any games that you know cause arguments because tensions may be running high – it’s supposed to be a fun way to take your mind off the storm!
A pack of cards can also be a good distraction because it offers so many options. On your own? Solitaire. In a group? Gin rummy or poker. With the kids? Challenge them to build the tallest house they can with the cards.
Top tip – Keep all your games together so they are easy to find when needed.
Have a Flutter
Whether you’re looking for distractions or already living on your adrenaline, there’s no denying placing a bet is exciting. From the first hope-fuelled moment to the rush of a win, you won’t be bored when both pride and prizes are at stake. The best no deposit casinos out there will keep you entertained for hours without demanding a large down payment.
Top tip – Set a realistic budget and stick to it.
Huddle Together for Warmth
The worst storms may take out electricity sources leaving your home colder than you’d choose, but if you and your loved one are barricaded in, why not snuggle up close and share body heat? Storms naturally lend themselves to romance, so light some scented candles, maybe even fire up the log burner, and pour two glasses of your favourite tipple – rekindle your relationship as the weather outside rages.
Top tip – Stock up on candles and tealights. You never know when they might be a necessity rather than a luxury!
Watch The Storm
We’ve all heard the phrase ‘if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em’. Whether you’re snowed in or in the middle of an apocalyptic thunderstorm, sometimes watching at the window can be all the entertainment you need.
Top tip – Safety first. Don’t be tempted to go outside if there are potential dangers.
Sleep It Out
We all complain of being exhausted with the pressures of modern life taking their toll on our physical and emotional wellbeing, so why not make the most of the storm by catching up on some sleep. Block out the outside world by wearing earplugs or listening to music via headphones and pull down the blackout blinds. Bury yourself under the duvet and enjoy the rest guilt-free.
Top tip – If you are napping in the day, set an alarm. If you stay in bed too long you won’t sleep at night.
Riddle Me This, Riddle Me That
Get those brain cells working by sharing puzzles with those you are with. Crosswords work well as a collaborative event with word searches best suited to individuals. If you are with family or friends, share jokes and riddles to amuse yourselves. Guessing games are also fun and very popular with youngsters, so classics like ‘I Spy’ and ‘Who Am I?’ will go down a storm (excuse the pun!)
Top tip – Ask your family and friends their favourite guessing games to add to your repertoire.
However, you choose to entertain yourself during a storm, make sure you do it safely, and even if it feels like it might go on forever, it won’t. Ride it out by keeping busy.
